Bulimia, the binge-eating syndrome, is a new entry in our nomenclature but the practices subsumed under this title have long been known. Before making the diagnosis and before entering on a course of treatment, the therapist must distinguish between the various types of bulimia and must determine what other emotional conditions and problems are present. Once this has been done, there are several different models that treatment may follow. The obsessive-compulsive model is particularly applicable since many normal-weight bulimics meet the criteria for this personality disorder and do well when its treatment approaches are followed. Brief case reports are included which illustrate the diversity of the clinical picture and some of the difficulties likely to arise in the course of therapy.
