Facial aesthetics is considered as a subject of study, in conjunction with its effect on orthodontic thought. The assessment of the profile in orthodontics is outlined with its relevance to current practice. The relationship between the profile and facial appearance is investigated. Finally the variations within an individual face are discussed.
