Spider mites are a continuous potential danger in many crops, because of their ability to develop resistance to chemicals which initially give effective control. The predictive value of laboratory experiments with new chemicals appears to be rather limited. Close monitoring of developments in commercial situations may be an appropriate temporary solution, but real progress seems more likely to stem from an understanding of the mechanisms of resistance and its inheritance.
