WE would like to report an outbreak of clinical disease and mortality in adult sheep caused by Paramphistomum species (rumen fluke) infection. The affected group comprised 35 cast Scottish mule ewes that had been moved to new grazing in mid-November 2011. Three ewes died three weeks later and the group was treated for suspected liver fluke with nitroxynil at this time. The field had not been grazed by cattle or sheep for one year; however, deer, which can also be infected with rumen fluke, were reported in the area.
