Whilst existing as a separate country only from the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after the First World War, Czechoslovakia has a long tradition of culture and industry. However, its geographical position has brought involvement in most European conflicts, each of which have had their impact on the development of the region. By far the most serious were the combined effects of the second world war and the subsequent Communist revolution.
