We report an x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism study of the dilute magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)N. Two distinct components are observed in the Mn ${L}_{2,3}$ spectra, with a ratio that depends on sample properties. From comparisons of measurements obtained with different detection modes and under different magnetic fields, we ascribe the two components to, respectively, (i) bulk-incorporated Mn in a hybridized ${d}^{4}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{d}^{5}$ configuration, which is weakly ferromagnetically coupled; and (ii) Mn incorporated within a surface depletion layer, in a paramagnetic ${d}^{5}$ configuration.
