Radial velocities of blue stragglers in M3

Abstract

The authors have obtained 1 A resolution spectra of five blue stragglers in M3 all with mv ≥ 17.3 using the MMT spectrograph and photon-counting Reticon. The spectra cover the range 4580 A to 5450 A, and except for Hβ are devoid of strong features. From measurements of the Hβ lines in the five blue stragglers and three velocity standards the authors obtain vsun; = -149±19 km sec-1 for the five blue stragglers. A comparison of this result with the M3 cluster velocity of -147 km sec-1 obtained by Gunn and Griffin from measurements of bright M3 giants provides evidence that these blue stragglers are indeed cluster members.
