
Lorsque les dimensions des lasers deviennent submicroniques, la physique qui gouverne leur fonctionnement est modifiee : les effets quantiques sont alors preponderants et le role joue par l’emission spontanee devient tres important, non seulement au passage du seuil, mais aussi en regime d’emission stimulee. Les progres technologiques recents ont permis, ces dernieres annees, de fabriquer de telles sources de lumiere laser et de commencer a explorer cette nouvelle physique. Dans cet article, nous presentons l’architecture de ces nouveaux lasers et illustrons, par l’exemple du passage du seuil, la physique sous-jacente, qui reste encore incomprise.
