The redn. of transition metal oxides and of SnO2 + Sb2O3 by 1-butene and butadiene was investigated. A single parameter Qo, defined as the heat necessary to dissociate 0.5 O2 from the oxide, detd. the type of reaction. Starting from Q0 = 17 (MnO2) and proceeding to Q0 = 70 (SnO2), the redn. produces; CO2 -> (oxygenated products) -> butadiene -> isomerization. Max. production of butadiene occurs around Q0 = 50. In some cases such as SnO2 the reoxidn. by O2 of the reduced surface causes the surface to become more strongly oxidizing. This is ascribed to the formation of peroxide radical ions.
