Abstract Besides desorption and surface trapping of selectively excited Kr atoms at the surface of Kr-doped Ar crystals, a new relaxation mechanism has been observed. It includes surface diffusion of long-living atomic-type surface centers and guest-molecule formation at the surface. It has been analyzed with time- and spectrally-resolved luminescence measurements. The results are interpreted with a model based on two-dimensional diffusion controlled reactions with an initial random distribution of guest atoms at the surface. We obtained an activation energy of 6meV for thermally activated diffusion which is in good agreement with the lateral potential wells of the excited Kr atom on top of an Ar surface.
