</script>pH is undoubtedly the most important chemical soil characteristic that determines the chemical environment of higher plants and soil microbes. There are few reactions involving any component of the soil or of its biological inhabitants that are not sensitive to soil pH. This sensitivity must be recognized in any soil-management system. pH is defined. Some approaches to the measurement of soil pH are briefly described. The factors affecting pH and its measurement are discussed.
