Increasing economics and environmental compatibility requirements led to innovative and different concepts in production industries. Therefore light metals, as aluminium, are already established in welding applications. Detailed tests with laser-MIG-hybrid welding of aluminium alloys have, due to the large potential of this process, led to the introduction into industrial manufacturing, especially in the automotive industries. The concurrent development of new and more effective solid-state lasers has also opened a broad application spectrum in the field of light metal processing. For this reason the ISF — Welding and Joining Institute is testing hybrid welding of aluminium alloys under the aspects of gap bridging, welding depth, prevention of weld porosity, weld strength, online process control and quality assurance.
