Abstract

The laimosphere, a term analogous to rhizosphere, describes the zone of influence of below-ground portions of shoots on soil microbial populations. Squash hypocotyls influenced microbial populations in soils 0–3 mm from hypocotyl surfaces. In this region, the laimosphere/soil ratio was 7, 36, and 7, respectively, for general bacteria, fluorescent pseudomonads, and actinomycetes.
