The results of 400 odd roughage analyses have been used to investigate the extent to which the crude protein content affects the low production level of the Surinam cattle population. Of the indigenous grasses the crude protein content in the aquatics is obviously high, contrary to that in cultivated grasses which is only somewhat higher than that in the other indigenous grasses. Herbs and leguminous plants may be considered as protein rich forages.
