Why studies in Soviet philosophy?

Why studies in Soviet philosophy?

Abstract

While other departments of Sovietology — above all historiography, but also law, political economy, political science and sociology — are constantly developing, little attention is being paid in the non-Communist world to the study of Soviet philosophy. There must be at present something like 12,000 teaching philosophers outside the Soviet Bloc, and probably more: but there are certainly no more than a few dozen among them who manifest any degree of academic knowledge of Soviet thought. At the Universities we do not know of a single regular chair entirely dedicated to the study of Soviet philosophy. In the great American and European centers of Soviet Studies there are only very few competent philosopher-Sovietologists. Some centers have, it is true, a Marxologist: but Marxology is not the same as Sovietology. When we read American or European philosophical magazines, we find only an exceptional paper or a review concerning Soviet doctrines. At the philosophical congresses, if no philosophers from Communist countries are present, nobody even cares to mention the subject.
