Numerical taxonomy (formalized cluster analysis) can be defined as a set of procedures which assign objects to groups in such a way that each group reveals some distinct characteristic of the sample population (Orloci 1978). This means in the classification of vegetation that any cluster of releves or synoptic tables can be syntaxonomically meaningful only if it can be characterized by a set of species.
