Taxonomic and zoogeographic considerations on Lecanidae (Rotifera: Monogononta) of the Balearic archipelago, with description of a new species, Lecane margalefi n.sp.

Abstract

Twenty species of rotifers of the genus Lecane were found in inland fresh and brackish waterbodies of the Balearic archipelago L. margalefi n. sp. has been found in a semi-arid area of Majorca island, and it is probably endemic. It is an illoricate species related to the L. luna group by its foot morphology, but similar in shape and size to L. boorali Koste & Shiel. The taxonomy of some other species of the genus, recorded from the archipelago, is discussed (L. bifurca (Bryce), L. grandis (Murray), L. lamellata (Daday), L. latissima Yamamoto, L. ohioensis (Herrick), L. punctata (Murray), L. pyriformis (Daday)).
