The genus Cucumis, belonging to the Cucurbitaceae, grows throughout the world, from the tropics to the temperate zones. Cucumis sativus L. is believed to have been cultivated in India some 3000 years ago and has been known in the Mediterranean region since the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Cucumis comprises nearly 40 species, of which several are important market crops, C. sativus L. and C. melo L. being the main ones (Whitaker and Davis 1962; Esquinaz-Alcazar and Gulick 1983).
