Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) ranks as the world’s fourth most important cereal crop after wheat, maize, and rice (Poehlman 1987; FAO 1996). It is grown over a wider environmental range than any other cereal crop, and grows in many areas probably unsuitable for the other crops. It is more tolerant to drought, summer frosts, and saline and alkaline soils than other cereals (Fedak 1994). The grain is used for animal feed, malt, and human food.
