The rich and complex culture history of north coastal Peru is inextricably tied to the unique opportunities and constraints of the natural environment. This chapter delves into the complex ecological landscapes of the Central Andes and the northern north coast in particular. Against this backdrop, we then provide an in-depth overview of terrestrial and aquatic resources that were available to north coastal communities, including those locally available and those accessible by regional and extraregional exchange.
