Success in somatic embryogenesis has been reported for conifer species since few years. Picea abies, P. glauca, P. mariana, Pinus taeda and P. lambertiana as well as Pseudotsuga menziesii have given embryogenic callus from immature and, for some species, mature zygotic embryos. Recently, it has been reported (3,4) that haploid somatic embryos develop on the female gametophytes of larch (Larix decidua). Embryogenic callus lines were also derived (2) from immature zygotic embryos of hybrid larch (Larix decidua x L. kaempferi).
