National narrative and subjective experiences: the case of the US war in Vietnam

Abstract

This article explores the psychic transmission of traumatic experiences linked to the Vietnam War. Through an initial immersion fieldwork in Hanoi, it aims to outline the complexity of representations of trauma and its various forms of transmission, particularly through collective ritual practices and places of worship that emerged in response to state censorship. This work has enabled us to identify the conflicts between the official memory conveyed through national commemorative monuments – a public narrative of victorious heroes – and subjective memories – accounts of individual suffering and shame. The methodology adopted opens up the exploration of the mechanisms of transmission (and non-transmission) of traumatic experiences in this particular context, highlighting the cultural implications and alternative spaces for transformation in the contemporary Vietnamese landscape.
