Abstract

Les stratégies de mobilité des hommes préhistoriques sont à l’origine des différentes vagues de migration en Europe. Elles sont fortement influencées par les variations des couverts végétaux aux cours des premiers cycles glaciaire-interglaciaire. Les premiers européens ont dû s’adapter à des environnements distincts, tels que des forêts ou des steppes. Dans le but de mieux connaître la diversité des habitats occupés par les hominidés du Pléistocène inférieur en Europe, une étude paléobotanique (pollen et phytolithes) a été effectuée sur le site préhistorique de Pont-de-Lavaud. Pont-de-Lavaud est le plus ancien site archéologique de plein air connu en France caractérisé par des industries lithiques archaïques (Mode 1). Les datations ESR donnent des âges compris entre 1 et 1,2 Ma, pour la formation sédimentaire à laquelle le site est associé. Les résultats polliniques révèlent que la végétation à Pont-de-Lavaud s’apparentait à une forêt tempérée, composée de chênes, de noisetiers, de charmes et de tilleuls, avec une tendance climatique chaude et humide comme en témoigne l’abondance du châtaignier et de Juglandaceae telles que le noyer, Carya, et Pterocarya. Les phytolithes nous informent sur la nature des graminées présentes au sein de la végétation, avec notamment la prépondérance du groupe desPooideae, graminées typiques du milieu tempéré. Pour la première fois, pour un site de plus d’un million d’années, la présence de l’homme est donc attestée dans un paysage de type forêt décidue spécifique d’une phase interglaciaire.
