Abstract

The search of plants with high storage accumulating capacity and tolerance to fluorides is a prerequisite for effective phytoremediation of arable soils, contaminated by aluminum production emissions. The primary objective of the research was to study the potential of local agricultural crops, as the most adapted to the specific soil and climatic conditions. The fluorine removal by above-ground biomass and bioaccumulation factor for five cropspecies, which are widespread in the Baikal Siberia agriculture, were determined in the field experiments carried out simultaneously in unpolluted and contaminated grey forest soils. Melilótus officinális and Raphanus sativus showed the greatest potential for phytoextraction of fluoride from the contaminated soil. The results extend the conception of candidates for phytoremediation purpose and can be used further for the decontamination of fluorides in polluted agricultural landscapes.
