Abstract

In the paper data of an empirical research carried out as part of a cross-country research project on study of education, migration and career strategies of rural schoolchildren and their parents expectations in Russia, China and Kazakhstan are analyzed. In 2011 a total questionnaire survey of juniors and seniors of secondary schools and of their parents was carried out in two rural Kazakhstan areas by means of tools developed by the Institute for education development of the Higher School of Economics. It showed that most rural schoolchildren are going to pursue studies in colleges and institutions of higher education in nearby towns. Main factors which influence the schoolchildrens choice include recognition of the fact that it is possible to receive high-quality education only in a town; awareness of a difference between village and town lifestyles and, consequently, of a difference in opportunities for self-fulfillment which they provide. Most schoolchildren count on winning state grants since their families cannot pay tuition and support them during a training period.
