Abstract

The paper presents results of comparison of emotionality and self-esteem between teenagers brought up in orphanages, foster families or biological families. We focus on a comparative analysis of teenagers’ anxiety, self-esteem, aggression and feelings of loneliness as well as their affective and personality correlates, in the samples under study. As compared to teenagers who live with parents, teenagers from orphanages were characterized by higher general anxiety, loneliness, aggression, fear of knowledge check and fear of not complying with expectations of others. Thus, the study confirmed that affective states of teenagers from orphanages, biological families and foster families are essentially different. It is emphasized that altering social environment associated with transferring from an orphanage to a foster family can increase negative feelings and manifest itself in their self-esteem and personal traits.
