Abstract

Introduction and Learning ObjectivesIn this chapter, we shall discuss both the theoretical principles guidingNeurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and how these principles can be transferredto the English language classroom, taking into consideration change anddevelopment both at a personal and a professional level. To this end, thechapter first gives background information on the origins of NLP, followed by abrief definition of NLP and then moving onto a discussion of the components ofNLP in greater detail in order to create a better understanding of the aims andscope of NLP. The second section of the chapter reviews the philosophy of NLP,focusing on limiting and empowering thoughts. The final section of the chapter provides practical examples of how some ofthe strategies and techniques may be applied by the learner or teacher on apersonal basis and in the language classroom, followed by a conclusion. Someguiding questions and thoughts are offered throughout the text so that youcan check your predictions and responses before, during and after reading aparticular section. This will help you to monitor your own learning by comparingwhat you already know with the new concepts that you will read about. Whenyou have finished reading the chapter, you should be able to:1. understand and explain what is meant by the term NLP;2. apply the principles of NLP on a personal basis;3. understand how to become a skilled communicator;4. apply the techniques and strategies suggested with learners at differentlevels of language proficiency
