The article is devoted to the disclosure of the functional potential of the Scribus software product in solving the tasks of the publishing process – layout and preparation of publications for printing. The aim of the article is to highlight the features of the software product Scribus as one of the most famous and comfortable to use in this context, justify its advantages over commercial counterparts, in particular, Adobe as a world leader in commercial software. To achieve this goal, methods of comparison (in the context of the functionality of Scribus and similar programs – Adobe InDesign, which replaced the previous QuarkXPress and Adobe Page Maker), analysis, and synthesis were used.The use of the method of included observation during the teaching of the discipline “Design and layout of the media” for more than five years at the Lviv Academy of Printing (2014-2020) allowed to identify various practical aspects of using Scribus, to identify improvements to its functionality for the process of making complex publications.In the context of further dissemination of new modern hardware and its adaptation to working with typesetting programs, it is confirmed that the combination of functions in Scribus, which contains elements of computer graphics programs, makes it easy to use the program as a multifunctional product.The success of the use of Scribus in the educational process, in particular for future professionals in the publishing industry, has been proven. Given the availability of the program in Ukrainian localization, the simplicity and conciseness of its interface, and the availability of a free license that allows you to use the program outside the learning process in higher education, it has been grounded expediency of Scribus usage for students in offline classroom classes and during quarantine to perform tasks remotely.
