April 23, 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lev I. Shteinvolf – who was a well-known scientist in the field of mechanics, a doctor of technical sciences, and a professor of theoretical mechanics at Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. His contributions to the development of computer algebra systems in the field of mechanics, and the introduction of such methods in scientific, practical, and educational activities were invaluable. Noteworthy is his creation of the theoretical foundations and practical implementation of a fundamentally new software in the field of machine dynamics calculations: the KiDiM computer algebra system. The article contains biographical data, and the results of the research and teaching of Professor Shteinvolf and his disciples. Graduates over many generation have forever preserved the memory of this remarkable scientist and educator.
