Viktor Ikonnyk: from Experiment to Tradition

Abstract

The relevance of the study. Despite the fact that Victor Ikonnyk is considered as an outstanding founder of chamber choral performance in Ukraine, and taking into account that the ensemble organized by him was the flagship of choral art in the country for a long time, it is necessary to point out that his personality and creative legacy remain poorly explored and known. The “amateur period” of the chamber choir history still remains a largely “terra incognita” — the unknown land. The necessity of expanding the base of factual sources and deepening our ideas about the periods of formation and vectors of development of the first chamber choir in Ukraine determines the relevance and scientific novelty of this publication. Main objective of the study is to highlight as fully as possible the initial period in the creative development of the chamber choir in Ukraine under the direction of V. Ikonnyk. The author has employed the following research methods: source investigation to study archival records, and printed sources; historical-chronological to determine the stages of development of the Chamber Choir; analytical to study socio-cultural factors of the choir development; method of generalization to summarize the study.Conclusions. On the basis of the study of archival records and interviews with Valentina Oleksandrivna Ikonnyk-Zakharchenko as well as analyzing the available periodical press publications, we have steady reason to say that V. Ikonnyk's innovative approach in directing the choir can be observed in all areas of his activity. The beginning of the tradition of chamber choral performance in Ukraine; the desire to educate a highly artistic, mobile creative team with unlimited opportunities; the revival and restoration of the national choral heritage of the seventeenth century (performance of works with spiritual themes in the original language); working with virtually unknown ancient and contemporary Western European music, spreading the creative legacy of contemporary Ukrainian composers of the time — all of the above is a testament to his reform efforts. Also the following conclusion is that he was one of first who managed to draw attention to the sacred places of Kiev and open them as new venues for choral music — the State ArchitecturalHistorical Reserve “Sofia Cathedral Museum”, the Refectory Church at the Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Reserve, the Museum “St. Cyril Church”, the Museum “St. Andrew Church”, House of Organ and Chamber Music (the temple of Roman Catholic Church).Evidence that the line of creative activity initiated by Victor Iconnyk has its followers in Ukraine is a significant number of domestic chamber choirs that fruitfully develop the traditions laid by the maestro.
