Abstract

Abstract Intervisibility between sanctuaries is a phenomenon which has been well studied for the Minoan Peak cults of Crete but which has received less attention in Greece itself. Though, one may identify interesting cases of visual interaction between regional groups of sanctuaries. The paper focuses on two examples. The first one is the group of mountain top cults of Zeus surrounding the Saronic gulf and the cult of Zeus on top of Mt Hellanion in Aegina, which stands in its very center. The second one is the visual triangle formed by Mt Lykaion, Mt Ithome and the sanctuary of Apollo at Vassai in Arcadia. Both cases show in its own way that the mountain top cults of Zeus and their visibility played a central part in the shaping of the Greek religious landscape from the Bronze Age to the Archaic period.
