Migracije jesetri (Acipenseridae) u Republici Hrvatskoj

Abstract

Sturgeons (Acipenseridae) are a family of long-living migratory fishes, which undertake migrations from the sea to rivers or along the river, so they could find suitable spawning grounds. In the Republic of Croatia, the following species of sturgeons have been recorded: Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, A. naccarii, A. nudiventris, A. ruthenus, A. stellatus, A. sturio and Huso huso. In Croatia, these species were recorded in the Adriatic sea and its tributaries (Cetina, Neretva), and in the Danube river and its tributaries (Sava, Kupa, Mura, Drava, Una, Lonja). Sturgeon species found on the Adriatic coast and rivers (A. naccarii, A. stellatus and A. sturio) were a rare find and remain so. Like Danube and Danube tributaries species (A. gueldenstaedtii, A. nudiventris, A. ruthenus, A. stellatus, A. sturio and H. huso), they are mostly endangered by overfishing, water pollution, and dam building, which causes fragmentation of populations and cease of migration. Once abundant in Danube and its tributaries, during the 20th century, especially after the construction of Djerdap I and II dams in Serbia, numbers of all species recorded have gone down, and all of them, except A. ruthenus, are considered regionally extinct in Croatia. To save remaining sturgeon stocks in Croatia, and to ensure their growth, there is a need for international cooperation between countries on Danube and Adriatic sea, stricter laws which will regulate sturgeon fishing and suppress poaching, reintroduction of sturgeons in rivers through sturgeon farming, and removing or bypassing barriers which stop sturgeon migrations.
