Abstract

Dîwân-i-Hilâlî. This manuscript is now IO Islamic 1423 in the India Office collections. [metadata: Hermann Ethé, Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts in the Library of the India Office, 2 vols. (Oxford: India Office, 1903): volume 1, number 1198 here with notations and hyperlinks]. Hilâlî (Nos. 1423 -1431). 1423 Dîwân-i-Hilâlî (ديوان هلالى). Lyrical poems of Maulânâ Badr-aldîn Hilâlî of Astarâbâd, who was put to death by order of ‘Abdallâhkhân (so in the Âtashkada and Sprenger, correctly ‘Ubaid-allâhkhân) Uzbeg at Harât, A.H. 939 (A.D. 1532, 1533); this date is given by the poet’s intimate friend Sâm Mirzâ, and in the Âtashkada, No. 81 (col. 265 in the Bodleian Cat.), comp. also Haft Iḳlîm, No. 1170 (col. 466 in this Cat.). Almost all the other tadhkiras fix Hilâli’s death in A.H. 936 (A.D. 1529, 1530); see, for instance, Safînah, No. 60 (col. 213 in the Bodelian Cat.); Khazâna-i-’âmirah, No. 131 (ib. col. 260); Khulâṣat-alkalâm, No. 77 (ib. col. 301), etc.; and comp. Rosen, Persian MSS., p. 126, l. 4 ab infra. Other copies are described in Bodleian Cat., Nos. 1019-1021; Rieu ii. p. 656; A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 426; W. Hilâli’s dîwân consists of ghazals, arranged alphabetically, and a few ḳiṭ’as and rubâ’îs at the end. Beginning of the ghazals, on fol. 1b: اى نور خدا در نظر از روى تو ما را بگذار كه در روى تو بينيم خدارا Beginning of the ḳiṭ’as, on fol. 91b: اى سيه نامه گر براى نجات حرف از باب رحمتش طلبى No date. No. 1198, ff. 94, 2 coll., each ll. 13; Nasta’lîḳ; size, 8½ in. by 4½ in.
