Between 2019 and 2022, Liz Bishoff of The Bishoff Group and Thomas F. R. Clareson, senior consultant for Lyrasis, conducted a series of in-depth interviews, surveys, and focus groups with participants in CLIR's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, focusing specifically on the fellowships in data curation for the humanities created with the support of the Mellon Foundation. Over a span of four years, the team interviewed approximately 70 current and former fellows, supervisors, and program leaders, examining the value the fellows' work has held for scholarship and library practice. An emerging area when the data curation fellowships were first introduced to the program in 2012 and 2013, data and--later--software curation have expanded as areas of focus within the program and within the library and archival professions. The fellows’ roles also changed significantly both before and during the COVID-19 global pandemic, and the report documents how this evolution affected their experiences, host organizations, and CLIR’s program. The report encapsulates the team’s methodologies and presents a compilation of their findings. The evaluation not only considers the impact of CLIR’s fellowship program, but also opens up new horizons for organizations aspiring to create dynamic short-term project-based employment opportunities within academic and cultural heritage spheres while nurturing new talent.
