Phytoplankton size-abundance spectra in a coastal embayment (Ría de Vigo, NW Iberia)

Abstract

This research was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education through the project 'Responses of marine phytoplankton to environmental variability across levels of biological organization' (POLARIS, Grant No. PGC2018-094553B-I00, PI: E. Marañón) and by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology through the project 'Size structure, production and respiration in the microbial plankton of Ría de Vigo' (Grant No. REN2000-1248, PI: E. Marañón).

The data set include the phytoplankton cell abundance (cell mL-1) and size distribution of cells ranging from 0.5 µm to 158 µm in equivalent spherical diameter. The data were obtained from surface samples collected in a central station (42°14.09’N, 8°47.18’W) of Ría de Vigo (NW Iberian peninsula) during weekly/monthly samplings in two time series: July 2001 – July 2002 and April 2021 – May 2022.
