Abstract

Gymnostomus ariza (Hamilton, 1807) [N]—Ariza labeo Taxonomy. Original description: Cyprinus ariza Hamilton, 1807: 344, pl. 31 [Vedawati stream, tributary of Tungabahdra River, Krishna basin, southern India; no types preserved].— Afghanistan synonyms: Cirrhinus ariza (Hamilton 1807); Gobio limnophilus McClelland, 1839; Gobio isurus McClelland, 1839; Gobio hamiltonii Jerdon, 1849; Chondrostoma gangeticum Valenciennes, 1844; Cirrhina dussumieri Valenciennes, 1842; Gobio bovianus Jerdon, 1849; Cirrhina bengalensis Bleeker, 1853; Cyprinus bangon Hamilton, 1839.—Revisions: Roberts (1997: 183) as Cirrhinus ariza, Yang et al. (2012: 370).—Illustrations: Hamilton (1807: pl. 31) as Cyprinus ariza; Roberts (1997: 180, figs. 3–4) as Cirrhinus ariza. Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by McClelland (1842) as Gobio limnophilus; treated by Coad (1981: 10) as a synonym of Cirrhinus reba. —Afghanistan materials: None. Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Kabul River.—General distribution: Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.—Habitat: This species inhabits clear rivers and tanks. A plankton and detritus feeder. Breeding takes place in flooded shallows in june-september. Freshwater. Economic importance. Commercially important. Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC (Dahanukar 2010a).—Threats: The threats to this species are not known.—Low sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Low priority for conservation action.
