Checklist of the flora of the Chatkal State Biosphere Reserve (Uzbekistan)

Abstract

Checklist of the flora of the Chatkal State Biosphere Reserve (Uzbekistan) Beshko N.Yu., Gaziev A.D., Kodyrov U.H., Kosimov Z.Z., Nazarov B.I. Institute of Botany, Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan The Chatkal State Biosphere Reserve is located in Bostanlyk District of Tashkent Region of the Republic of Uzbekistan, in the western part of the Chatkal Range. This protected area was established in 1947 under the name of Mountain-Forest reserve (since 1959 – Chatkal Reserve), and it was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1986. The nature reserve was created to protect the unique landscapes, flora and fauna of the Western Tien Shan. The territory of the Chatkal Reserve has changed several times. Initially, it included the basins of the river Bashkyzylsay and Shavazsay, and covered 22,400 hectares. In 1952, Shavazsay was excluded from the reserve, and the protected area was reduced to 11,103 hectares. In 1959, the Maydantal site (24,706 ha) was joined to the nature reserve, and its total area has reached 35,724 ha. Up to 2018, the Chatkal Reserve consisted of two separated plots: Bashkyzylsay (11,103 ha) on the southwest slope of the Chatkal Range and Maydantal (24,150 ha) on the north slope of this mountain chain. On May 16, 2018, the Ugam-Chatkal Biosphere Reserve (42,952.81 ha) was established by the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 367, and the Bashkyzylsay site of the Chatkal Reserve was transferred to this new protected area. Thus, at the present, the territory of the Chatkal Reserve includes the Maydantal site only, and its total area is 24,706 hectares. The flora of the Chatkal Reserve is well-studied, and numerous herbarium specimens collected from this protected area are stored in TASH, MW, LE and reserve's office. In 1986, L.S. Krasovskaya and I.G. Levichev published the book "Flora of the Chatkal reserve" with a synopsis of 1151 taxa (species, subspecies and hybrids). Of them, 1004 taxa were reported for Bashkyzylsay site and 745 – for Maydantal site. In 2007, K.Sh. Tojibaev published an updated checklist of flora of the reserve with 1136 species and subspecies from 462 genera and 92 families. The modern territory of the Chatkal Reserve is located in the basin of the river Akbulak on the northern slope of the Chatkal Range, in a remote mountainous area, inaccessible in winter. It includes valleys Tavaksay, Zindansay, Tereklisay and Tashkeskensay with altitudes from 1200 to 3875 m above sea level, strongly dissected terrain, and montane, subalpine and alpine landscapes. In 2022, within the framework of inventory of the flora of the Tashkent region, the researches of the Institute of Botany carried out a revision of the flora of the Chatkal Reserve (taking into above mentioned account territorial changes) and compiled an actual checklist of flora, which includes 771 species of vascular plants.
