Kitepower will start operating its Falcon system on a new testing site in 2023. The testing site on the northwest coast of the Republic of Ireland has been developed specifically for Airborne Wind Energy in cooperation with a large energy company. The project is partially funded by the EU Interreg program MegaAWE. The site is located well within an uninhabited area of peatland, and the topography only features wide, low and shallow structures. The highest hill in the proximity is about 4.5 km to the NE and reaches about 150 m over the surrounding land. The closest road is 1.6 km to the east, and the closest houses are 1.5 km to the north of the site. The closest bigger airport is Ireland West International Airport in Knock which is about 70 km to the east, and there is Ballina Airfield, 40 km to the east and Bellmulet Aerodrome, 20 km to the west. The wind conditions on this site provide strong winds with predominant wind directions between W and SW. The mean wind speeds are 5 m/s and 11 m/s at 10 m and 200 m, respectively. So, in general, wind speeds are very often in the ideal range for airborne wind operations. Kitepower will deploy one of the 100kW Falcon systems to the site and get ready for continuous operation. The goal of the activities are: Gather long-term performance data. Operate reliability for a more extended period of time. Remote operation from the Netherlands. This talk will iterate over the past projects of Kitepower, including the Aruba deployment, highlight the challenges connected to this new project, and further present the implementation plan.
