वैदिककाले ऋषिमुनिभिश्च प्रकृतिमानवयोर्मध्ये अतुल्यसमन्वयं प्रतिपादित:। मनुष्यस्य उद्धारणार्थं प्रकृते: रक्षणार्थं बह्व्य: पद्धतय: बोधिता:। तासु पद्धतीषु यज्ञविधि: अन्यतमा अस्ति। यज्ञकार्यं पवित्रीकरणकार्यम् इत्युच्यते। अस्माकं वेदेषु बह्व्य: यज्ञविधय: निर्दिष्टा: सन्ति। प्रधानतया श्रौतसूत्रेषु दृश्यन्ते । श्रौतसूत्रा: वैदिकग्रन्था: एव, वस्तुत: तेषु सूत्रेषु तस्य कालस्य कर्मकाण्डविधानानि सूचितानि सन्ति। यज्ञा:, होमा:, इष्ट्य: इत्याद: श्रौतसूत्रेषु अन्तर्गता: सन्ति। वेदविहितकर्मणि अनुष्ठानानि श्रौताग्निना अनुष्ठिता: सन्ति। ‘श्रौत’ शब्द: ‘श्रुति’ शब्दात् व्युत्तपन्न: अस्ति।
