This species is grouped within the Thompsoni -group under Brevirostris-subgroup, and closely resembles S. brevirostris, however, it can be distinguished based on the following characteristics; in S. chaitiamvongae, (1) a median digitate process exposed on the front of the apex of the rostrum, (2) a longer and more slender antennular peduncle (3) carpopropodus of third to eighth thoracic endopods not divided into sub-articles, (4) dactylus and the terminal claw of thoracic endopods three to eight surrounded by long setae, and (5) three median spines arming apex of the telson more than half as long as the long spines flanking them; while in S. brevirostris, (1) a small process wanting in the front of the apex, (2) short and slightly slender antennular peduncle, (3) third to eighth thoracic endopods carpopropodus divided into two articles by a somewhat oblique articulation, (4) dactylus and the terminal claw of thoracic endopods surrounded by short setae, particularly on the eighth endopods, and (5) three median spines arming apex of the telson less than half as long as the long spines (Murano & Fukuoka 2008).
