Abstract

71. * Eugenia teapensis McVaugh, Fieldiana, Bot. 29: 459 (1963) EOO: 4,952.744 km ². AOO: 16 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Endangered. Eugenia teapensis occurs in the states of Tabasco, Chiapas, and Veracruz, from 90 to 900 m elev. The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) fall within the thresholds of Endangered category under the criterion B. There are between three to four known locations based on five records recorded (three in Tabasco and one respectively for Chiapas and Veracruz), all of them are related to different ongoing threats. The occurrence biome is the Humid Tropical Forest, mostly in soils of karst origin. The habitat is mostly well conserved in the municipality of Uxpanapa, (Veracruz) and in Ocozocuatla de Espinoza, a municipality that is within the polygon of the “Reserva de la Biosfera Selva El Ocote”. However, in Teapa, Tabasco, its habitat is very fragmented and impacted by agricultural activity, resulting in a high rate of degradation (CONABIO 2018). Taking in accounting that this species was not recorded within the protected area and there is no conservation measure in place yet, a continuing decline of habitat is inferred. Therefore, Eugenia teapensis is classified as Endangered (EN) due to its restricted distribution, number of locations (>5) and inferred continuing decline of habitat quality, meeting the criteria B1ab(iii)+B2ab(iii). Specimens examined:— MEXICO. Chiapas: Gonzales & Espinoza 519645 (MEXU!); Tabasco: Cowan & Ramos 2686 (MEXU!); Veracruz: Thomas 2686 (MEXU!).
