Viburnum brachybotryum var. tengyuehense Smith 1916

Abstract

2. Viburnum brachybotryum Hemsley var. tengyuehense Smith (1916: 137) Type:— CHINA. Yunnan: Tengchong (Tengyue), about 2000 m s.l., shrub, 4–5 feet high, July 1912, G. Forrest 8756 [lectotype E (E00265390)!, (Fig. 1-B) here designated]. Residual syntypes:— CHINA. Yunnan: Tengchong (Tengyue), about 2000 m s.l., shrub, 4–5 feet high, July 1912, G. Forrest 8770 [E (E00265389)!], CHINA. Yunnan: Tengchong (Tengyue), valley, about 2150 m s.l., shrub, 6–12 feet high, June 1912, G. Forrest 8216 [K (K000797976)!]. Three gatherings, G. Forrest 8756, G. Forrest 8770 & G. Forrest 8216, were designated as “type” in Chinese, respectively, in the protologue (Smith 1916), and each gathering contains one sheet that preserved in two herbaria, thus all the three sheets should be of the syntype according to the Art. 9.6 of ICN (Turland et al. 2018). Although the sheet E00265390 has an additional label marked a “holotype” symbol by T.R. Dudley, it is definitely invalid according to the Art. 9.6 of ICN (Turland et al. 2018). The sheet E00265390 we designated as the lectotype was in the best condition. It was initially conceived as a variety of Viburnum brachybotryum Hemsley (1888: 349), and then it has been merged with V. tengyuehense (Smith) Hsu (1966: 72) (Hsu 1966).
