Abstract

Budai Ézsaiás: Commentatio de causis culturae (…). Gottingae: Io. Georgii Rosenbuschii. 1794. Budai Ézsaiás (1766 – 1841) a Debreceni Református Kollégiumban eltöltött évek után 1792 és 1794 között Göttingenben, Hollandiában és Oxfordban járt peregrinációs úton, útja során itt közölt értekezésével 1792-ben szerzett „doctor philosophiae” címet a göttingeni Georgia Augusta egyetemen (értekezése nyomtatásban 1794-ben jelent meg). Az értekezés központi kérdése az, hogy az ókortól a kortárs időszakig tekintve miért volt lassabb a kulturális tudásáramlás és -terjedés Európa északi részein, mint a délieken. Válaszában hivatkozik a klímaelméletre, kulturális földrajzi adottságokra, kereskedelmi kapcsolatokra, vallási vonatkozásokra, kivételes kulturális személyiségek szerepére. Véleménye szerint a tudásáramlás dinamikája a 18. század végére megfordult, az anyanyelvi kultúra propagálása és a lelkiismereti szabadság elismerése miatt Észak-Európa került előnybe. Az értekezés eredeti formájában lábjegyzeteket tartalmaz, ezek a szövegközlésben az eredeti szövegbeli helyükre beszúrva, szögletes zárójellel keretezve, kisebb betűmérettel elkülönítve jelennek meg.
