This book chapter examines the function and methodological significance of historical figures and national heroes in history teaching within Polish schools. The author contrasts traditional pedagogical experiences and biographical approaches with the guidelines introduced by the contemporary educational reform and the so-called "new core curriculum for history." The study analyzes how the changes in curriculum structures affect the presentation of historical characters and addresses the challenges faced by teachers in developing students' historical awareness, critical thinking, and civic attitudes through the analysis of biographical data in a modern educational environment.

Rozdział analizuje funkcję oraz metodologiczne znaczenie postaci historycznych i bohaterów narodowych w nauczaniu historii w polskich szkołach. Autor zestawia dotychczasowe doświadczenia pedagogiczne oraz ujęcia biograficzne z wytycznymi wprowadzonymi przez reformę edukacji i tzw. „nową podstawę programową z historii”. W pracy poddano analizie, jak zmiany w strukturze programowej wpływają na sposób prezentacji bohaterów dziejowych, oraz wskazano wyzwania, przed którymi stoją nauczyciele chcący rozwijać świadomość historyczną, myślenie krytyczne oraz postawy obywatelskie młodzieży poprzez analizę biograficzną we współczesnych realiach szkolnych.
