[IO Islamic 3089] فتوح السلاطين

Abstract

Futûḥ-alsalâṭîn. This manuscript is now IO Islamic 895 in the India Office collections. [metadata: Hermann Ethé, Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts in the Library of the India Office, 2 vols. (Oxford: India Office, 1903): volume 1, number 3089 here with notations and hyperlinks]. 895 Futûḥ-alsalâṭîn (فتوح السلاطين). A poetical history of the rulers of India from the rise of the Ghaznawide dynasty to A.H. 750 (A.D. 1349, 1350), the date of this composition (see fol. 333a, l. 8), by ‘Iṣâmî (عصامى), see fol. 21b, l. 3 ab infra; fol. 25a, l. 7; fol. 331b, l. 13 and the colophon. This imitation of Firdausî’s Shâhnâma, which is styled فتوح السلاطين (see fol. 331b, l. 4) and is mentioned by the author of the Ṭabaḳât-i-Akbarî as one of his authorities (compare Rieu i. p. 220), was dedicated by the poet, who is probably identical with Khwâjah ‘Abd Malik ‘Iṣâmî, mentioned by A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 81, to ‘Alâ-aldunyah wa aldîn Abû al-Mużaffar Bahmanshâh Sulṭân (see fol. 18a sq.), that is, ‘Alâ-aldîn Ḥasan, the first Bahmanî king of the Dakhan, who , according to the statement here, assumed sovereignty in A.H. 748=A.D. 1347 (see fol. 299a, but compare No. 449 in this Cat.). A complete index of the contents is given on ff. 1-13. Beginning of the poem, on fol. 14b: بنام خداوند هر دو جهان كنند ابتدا نامه كار آگهان A short account of the old Persian kings, on fol. 27a. Rise of Islâm and story of Muḥammad, on fol. 28b. Rise of Ghaznawide dynasty, on fol. 29a. General account of Indian rulers, on fol. 30a. Beginning of the main portion of the poem with the birth of Sulṭân Maḥmûd and reign of his successors, on fol. 46a sq. History of the house of Ghûr, on fol. 58a sq. ; followed in a more detailed manner by that of the Slave kings, the house of Khiljî, and the house of Tughluḳ. Beginning of ‘Alâ-aldin Ḥasan Bahmanî’s reign, on fol. 299a. Many pages are spoiled by worms; half of fol. 267 is torn away, half of fol. 327 left blank, and parts of verses occasionally omitted. No date. Tenth century of the Hijrah. This copy belonged formerly to Charl. Boddam (Calcutta, May 1st). No. 3089, ff. 333, 2 coll., each ll. 19; small but distinct Nasta’lîḳ; size, 71/4 in. by 45/8 in.
