The Scottish GHG Flux Network - Review of site operation and data status - October 2022

Abstract

This is the first network report of the Scottish Greenhouse Gas Flux network (SCO2FLUX), combining data from instrumentation owned by a partnership of research institutes and universities, and for which The James Hutton Institute acts as the principal network operator as well as providing the processing capability. The site network is designed to fill important evidence gaps in our understanding of Scottish land use impacts on emissions and forms an important part of the UK-wide network of sites that contribute to e.g., the continued development and revision of, e.g., the peatland Tier 2 emission factors in the UK GHG Inventory. They also feed directly into the training and validation of models that could allow for future or refined Tier 3 level reporting of emissions and more refined international land surface modelling efforts, e.g., the peatland-specific implementation in the UK land surface model, JULES, which is a component of the UK Earth Systems Model (UKESM), and which contributes to international efforts to understand future feedbacks on global climate.
