Internationalization@home: Digital teaching and learning courses for internationalizing the master's complementary studies and doctoral courses at Leuphana

Abstract

Digitalization has great potential for the internationalization of university teaching. For example, domestic students can realize the integration of international teaching and learning experiences into their individual study paths in a much more barrier-free and sustainable way if digital courses are available as a supplement. Digital courses at partner universities offer foreign students the opportunity to build up a bond with the university and the local teaching/learning culture in the run-up to a stay abroad, and thus optimize subsequent study courses abroad. Regarding internationalization at home and against the background of increasing numbers of international students in many places, digital seminars also make it possible to supplement classroom teaching with a varied English-language offering involving international teachers. Despite this wide range of possibilities, Germany has so far lacked strategic concepts that aim to make digital teaching/learning formats an integral part of the curricula and a meaningful supplement to classroom teaching. The project addresses this desideratum and sets itself the following goals: On the one hand, to implement pilot courses, especially for systematic internationalization at home at the Leuphana Graduate School; on the other hand, to evaluate the extent to which the seminars enable (intercultural) competence acquisition for the different student groups. The focus is on seminars at the master's and doctoral level, as well as a summer school that addresses both target groups.

This subproject is funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education as part of the project "Leuphana: Digital Transformation Lab for Teaching and Learning (DigiTaL)" at Leuphana University in Lueneburg. With this project, the Leuphana is creating a systematic, integrative place to strengthen digital teaching and learning under the leadership of Vice President Prof. Dr. Erich Hörl and Dr. Julia Webersik, Head of the Teaching Service. A total of 15 professors and other lecturer, students, all three schools and central institutions at Leuphana are involved in the project, which will run from 2021-2024, with 11 subprojects in the fields of "digital teaching-learning innovations", "digital literacy" and "digital internationalization".
