Authors: Moeller, Katrin;

Julius Kühn (1825-1910)

Abstract

Julius Kühn (1825-1910) was an important reformer of university agricultural education and is considered the founder of plant pathology. After obtaining a professorship at the University of Halle-Wittenberg via the second educational path, he set up numerous practical research, teaching and experimental stations. In Halle (Saale), the "Eternal Rye", founded by Kühn, continues to this day. The breeding of animals and plants served as practical training for the budding academics. In particular, the fight against diseases of cultivated plants were an important contribution to safeguarding the rapidly growing population in the 19th century. Kühn is an honorary citizen of the city of Halle (Saale) and has been honoured with an honorary grave since 2022.
