DISTRIBUTION: Alps of N.E. Italy and S. Austria to C. Yugoslavia. COMMENT: Subgenus Pitymys; see Chaline, 1974; regarded by Ellerman and MorrisonScott, 1951, as a synonym of subterraneus; Petrov and Zivkovic, 1971, Arh. Biol. Nauka, 23:31-32, provided evidence of specific distinctness. Possibly a subspecies of multiplex; see Storch and Winking, 1977, Z. Saugetierk., 42:78-88.
