Este artigo aborda as relações simbólicas existentes entre o homem, seu corpo e o adoecimento, assim como aponta algumas das contribuições da medicina contemporânea para adereçar esse processo nas sociedades ocidentais. Em seguida, mostra como a AIDS influenciou o trabalho de Félix González-Torres, artista estado-unidense que faleceu na década de 90 devido a essa doença. A pesquisa, por fim, tenta elucidar como a produção artística de González-Torres foi essencial para que este pudesse processar o adoecimento de seu corpo, a repressão social da época, a perda de seu parceiro e sua morte iminente. Este artigo tem como base principal as obras de François Laplantine (2004), Phillipe Ariès (2014), David Le Breton (2003, 2013 e 2013), Ernest Becker (1991), Nicolas Bourriaud (2009) e Elizabeth Kübler-Ross (2017). This article addresses the symbolic relationships that exist between man, his body and the process of being sick, at the same time as it points out some of contemporary medicine’s contributions in the way of managing this process in western societies. Afterwards, it shows how AIDS heavily influenced the work of Félix González-Torres, American artist who died in the 90s due to this disease. Finally, this article tries to elucidate how González-Torres’ artistic production was essential to help him process the illness of his body, the social repression present at the time, the loss of his partner and his imminent death. The research is based mainly on the works of François Laplantine (2004), Phillipe Ariès (2014), David Le Breton (2003, 2013 e 2013), Ernest Becker (1991), Nicolas Bourriaud (2009) and Elizabeth Kübler-Ross (2017).
